Saguenay Series, Part 4: Vive le Québec! Vive le Saguenay!

Okay, so! My trip to Northern Quebec! There is a lot to tell; I almost don’t know where to start. But I guess the beginning is always a good place …

I was invited by Quebec’s Ministry of Tourism to attend a press trip which would share with me six different family travel ideas from the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean area. But in reality, the trip was so well-organized and the area has so much to offer that I’ve come home with countless things that I want to share with you! And certainly not just family stories, because as I see it, the area has extremely broad appeal. Whether you’re a foodie, a cycling fanatic, outdoors lover or artisan, you’ll be able to find enjoyment and inspiration in this neck of our Canadian woods.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll share my experiences and recommendations to you via my own little blog here — and elsewhere. If I didn’t like a spot, found it over-priced or just plain dull, then I won’t bother writing about it. If, after all that, you find that I bored you to death … can you do me a big favour and let me know? I’m still working out what is of interest to you or not, and more than anything, I want to write something that will keep you coming back to share coffee with me!

Mark is a very popular boy

It looks like I’m not the only one who fell in love with Mark’s for women’s clothing! You can check out other outfits and opinions at the following Ottawa blogs as well:

  • Andrea at a peek inside the fishbowl has turned out to be my twin sister (albeit a 5′ 10″ twin sister with supermodel cheekbones!) with the almost identical outfit.
  • Christine, on the other hand, over at Coffees and Commutes is likely in the petite sizes and I’m sure you’ll agree she looks really fabulous in her Mark’s makeover outfit.
  • Lara at Gliding Through Motherhood noted that she was pleased to find great style in her size. (Although I suspect her size will be changing again soon thanks to Losing it in Ottawa)
  • Dani from Postcards from the Mothership also penned a love letter. She looks really happy in her photos but it’s hard to tell if that’s because of the outfit or because she escaped her de-cluttering work at the house!
  • Vicky from Some kind of Wondermom got into a groovy dress that looks like it’s a skirt and blouse. I think she’s right that with a cardi, it’s great for teaching and on its own, it’s great for a night out.
  • The ever-photogenic Loulou was also at Mark’s. You can check out her sparkly pink top and skinny black jeans on her blog Loulou’s views.

Did I miss anyone? Let me know! I’m loving the chance to see all these different outfits and different peeps!

My new BFF is named Mark

When I was younger (and er, smaller), I loved clothes shopping. But now, I only like (love!) shoe shopping.

Everything else leaves me feeling very, very grumpy. It is simply not fun to try on 10 pairs of pants just to find one that looks “okay.” Not “great” and “fabulous” — but just okay. And when you have very little spare time, I think you’ll agree that this is pretty much the last way you’d want to spend it. To add insult to injury, you then need to fork over your hard-earned cash for something that you feel just “okay” about.

All in all, clothes shopping has transformed itself from a fun experience to a chore that I like to get done and over with as expediently as possible. I’ve found ways to do this, too. I will block off a whole day and go to one or two stores that I know sell clothes that will work for me. I will only buy full outfits — never just a top or a skirt. I want the whole package all at once. I don’t want to have to shop around in other stores to find a match. This might sound like a more expensive way of doing things, but in the end I think I save a lot of money and closet space with this “method.”

My husband shops this way too. Basically he goes into The Bay or Mark’s Work Warehouse and gets all he needs, all at once. So perhaps I actually learned my “method” from him.

So when I received an invitation from the same Mark’s Work Warehouse that my husband shops at, I immediately recognized the name and felt familiar with what their products were. But I guess that’s the point …. most of us have been into a Mark’s Work Warehouse for something practical, like construction boots or men’s jeans, but not to shop for stylish women’s clothing that you could wear on the weekend or to the office.

But this invitation asked me to do just that. To come on in to Mark’s and check out the women’s section — try some things on and let a team of stylists help you do it. AND keep the outfit to bring home. Who could say no, really?

So in addition to spoiling me rotten, my new BFF is named Mark because he introduced me to:

As you can tell, I’m really smitten. I’m thrilled with the outfit that was I given to take home (which you can see in this picture), but more than that, I’m going to go back again this weekend and treat myself to at least a few new outfits. Mark’s my new BFF … sizes that fit, waistbands that don’t dig in, no mall traffic to fight and really great prices!

Thanks to High Road Communications and Mark’s for opening my eyes — this is my kinda shopping!

This Year’s Pinata: The Angler Fish

The pinata is a bit of a birthday tradition around here. Each year, Stella gets to pick a favourite creature and then she and her Dad create a pinata in its likeness. I’m not sure if we started making them because that’s just the way Hubby likes to do things or if it was because we could not find pinatas that appealed to Stella’s eccentric unique taste.

Either way, this year we have The Angler Fish. Apparently, this is now Stella’s favourite animal. If you’d like to learn more about this creature, there is a great overview on Oatmeal you might enjoy.

So this is what the Angler Fish looks like in real life. Pretty, isn’t it? This photograph by Bruce Robison shows how the angler fish has its own natural lure suspended in front of its face to draw in unsuspecting victims.

And here is what the final pinata looks like:

Despite how beautiful these pinatas are, each year they live but a short life before being pummelled to smithereens by a pack of children wielding sticks.

p.s. Yes, I have tons to share with you about my trip to Northern Quebec! But first I must attend to the birthday party preparations.

Saguenay Series, Part 3: The Trip Just Got A Whole Lot Less “Rough”

I’ve pretty much done everything possible to avoid packing for my Saguenay trip. I really don’t know why I do this. I just do. Once, I left Canada for a whole year and didn’t get around to packing until the night before.

With school coming up it’s been really easy to procrastinate. There are hundreds of thousands of other things to distract myself with.

Like labelling. Oh, how I have labelled today! You name it, I’ve labelled it. Hubby was teasing me about liking labelling … how I secretly luxuriate in its pleasure. “As if,” I said. “It has to be done! It says so on all the instruction sheets from the schools!” But, he’s right. We both know it.

Anyhow, since I was so busy labelling, I asked if he could bring up a suitcase for me. Then I started debating if I should bring a medium-sized check-in case, or just a small carry-on. He suggested that I’d need the larger one because I’d need not only hiking boots, but casual shoes and dress shoes. (Notice how it’s all about the footwear. The man does know me well after all these years, doesn’t he?)

“Dress shoes?” I asked.

“Well, yes. It looks like you’ll be eating in some nice restaurants.”

“What? What do you mean!”

“On the itinerary, it mentioned some nice restaurants and a hotel,” he says casually.

“What? A hotel?!”

At this point, I finally dug out the itinerary and read through it. And sure enough — there is a hotel on there!! This is mighty exciting … I thought I’d be “roughing” it. In fact, of the five nights I will be away, two are in a hotel and one is in a chalet. And there will be only one night without a shower and flush toilet.

I should probably feel disappointed. After all, this is my big adventure. Something that was to equate in some small way to those my hubby takes off on — a real nature experience. But you know what I say?

Wooooohoooooo!!!

p.s. I already checked and the hotel has free wifi  :)
