Cutting the Cable Brought Us Closer Together

#UnwindTogether

So, I don’t think I’ve told you yet that we cut our cable. Yep, we did it. It actually felt a bit uncomfortable to do it since the last time I didn’t have cable television was when I was a broke student. But the monthly bill for cable adds up, and we weren’t really watching that much. A few people we know had already taken the plunge and assured us we wouldn’t regret it.

And we certainly haven’t. We cancelled our cable service in June (it made sense to cut it before we went away to Australia since it wouldn’t be getting used anyhow) and haven’t looked back.

In fact, I think it’s actually brought my husband and I closer together. Almost nightly, we now spend an hour unwinding together before bed.

Are you imaging us playing card games or engaging in deep conversation? Bahahhaaa!! No, it’s more like this …

… except, I’m wearing flannel pants with my hair stuck up in a pony tail, there is lego all over the entire TV room, and my Hubby and I have darker circles under our eyes.

Yep, that’s right. We unwind together with a glass of wine, a snack, and a show. You see, before, we never really had shows that we both liked on TV. But since joining the world of Netflix, there are so many great series that we now like to watch an episode together most nights (and we’re not allowed to watch them without each other!).

The very first series we got hooked on was House of Cards. (SO! GOOD!) We’ve since watched Homeland, The Fall, Downton Abbey, and The Good Wife.

So imagine my serious delight when *this* box was delivered just in time for us to watch the latest release of 13 new episodes of House of Cards!

IMG_20150321_212310Yes, that’s right — Miss Vickie’s Potato Chips and Woodbridge Wines by Robert Mondavi! In total, there were four types of chips and four types of wines for Hubby and I to try. We happily tried them all.

The concept for this is to unwind together … together being you and your loved one, and chips and wine. Really, it’s a combination that can’t go wrong. To help us out, the box included suggested #UnwindTogether chip and wine pairings, like this one:

Sauvignon Blanc + Lime & Black Pepper + Drama

IMG_20150321_212718“The crisp and bright tropical notes of Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi’s Sauvignon Blanc create an explosion of flavour when sampled with Miss Vickie’s Lime & Black Pepper potato chip – the perfect fit for settling in with a drama.”

I definitely thought this would be my favourite pairing because I love my dramas and I love Lime & Black Pepper Miss Vickie’s. But, this one snuck in and won me over:

Merlot + Balsamic Vinegar & Sweet Onion

I’d never actually tried either before and they were both so yummy. And perfect for an hour together unwinding in front of a good show.

So, tell me, do you eat wine and chips together? (I know I’m not alone because apparently 61 per cent of Canadians say they pair a glass of wine with a snack like potato chips at least once or twice a month.) Next time you do, I recommend you try one of these combos. Also, what series should we start next now that we’re almost through the last of the House of Cards episodes?

  1. You had me at chips and wine! Why did I never think of pairing two of my faves!! lol I love the unwinding with Netflix. I’ve heard so many great things about those shows. Sounds like a perfect evening to me! I’m another who is considering getting rid of cable…or at least really limiting it. It is so expensive! Lol…love the description of you and hubby! Great post!

  2. Chips AND wine AND Netflix? Sounds like my kind of night.

Balsamic and Merlot would be beautiful together, I’ll have to try it.

  3. I don’t like wine, but I can inhale a bag of chips with the best of them :)

like you, my husband and I are watching tv TOGETHER for the first time. usually, he would be watching “How Do they Make That” while I watch “American’s Next Top Model” or another equally bad reality tv show! with Netflix, we now watch series together which has been great! we started with House of Cards & Sherlock, which we loved and are slowly getting through Breaking Bad, which neither of us is loving but we both want to watch to completion. we also watched Derek which we loved the first season of, but the 2nd not so much. yay Netflix! now I just need some of those chips :)

    • That’s exactly how it was with us! Hubby would watch some “make things” show and I’d watch some “fake version of reality show” and we’d never watch anything together. I know it probably doesn’t count as “quality time” but, for us, I really do enjoy our time watching a great series together! (p.s. We haven’t seen Sherlock yet! I am noting that one down.)

  4. WE cut our cable in January. I found with netflix, books and games that we never seem to watch it. Love the idea of wine and chips. I have never actually paired the two, but i like the idea!! This weekend I think I’m going to indulge in Sauvignon Blanc + Lime & Black Pepper + Drama !!! Sounds like a winning combo!!

  5. I eat almost anything with wine :) But seriously, I do eat chips with wine and love the flavour combo. Two of my faves

  6. LOL, we should cut cable too to get closer too

  7. Well, I’m not a wine drinker, and I will certainly eat chips but not regularly (or I wouldn’t fit into even my yoga pants!) but I do like the idea of couple time in the evening. Hubby has been watching House of Cards, Suits, etc. and I sometimes sit with him, occasionally drawn into the storyline, if I’m not already asleep on his shoulder.

But my question re: Netflix is this (we have it btw, but have not yet given up cable):
WHEN do you get to see the last episodes of Mad Men? :-)

  8. I’m usually a beer and chips kind of girl but I could “class it up” with wine instead of the beer!

  9. Orange is the New Black! It’s addictive. We binge watched both seasons in probably three days. We just started watching The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix, too – it’s cute, has potential, we’ll see how it measures up. One thing I like about Kimmy is that it’s just a half hour show, so easier to sneak one in if we’re both tired but just want a little unwinding before bed. I also second Sherlock – it’s GREAT, but each episode is 2 hours so we are having a hard time working our way through them as we rarely feel up to two hours of TV after the last kid FINALLY gets to bed.

We came very, very close to cutting our cable back in January but in the end we just couldn’t walk away. We’re too addicted to a few cable shows and felt we didn’t want to wait until they came out on Netflix or DVD. Are you watching old seasons of The Good Wife? How fast do new seasons/episodes show up on Netflix?

  10. This sounds like another great reason to celebrate Netficks. I don’t need much convincing these days.

  11. Natalie says:

    Greetings!
Can anyone tell me where I can find Miss Vickies Lime and Black Pepper Chips? Please please please!
