Downtown New York City with Kids (Part 2 of 2 of NYC with Kids)

In Part 1, Sarah shared so many awesome things to do with kids in Midtown New York City with kids that I’m not sure I’d ever even make it out to Downtown! But all that means is that I would need to schedule another trip to NYC … darn, I would hate that. 😉 Here, she share her favourite spots for kids in the Downtown region of New York City.

DIGGING DOWNTOWN NYC WITH THE KIDS (by guest poster: Sarah McCormack)

Depending on what part of town you are staying in, heading downtown by subway can be part of the fun, and the quickest way to go!  Our boys have always loved the subways in New York, and we find it a fairly easy system to navigate.

There are many areas to explore downtown.  However,  I will once again focus on the things that would appeal to kids. So, shopping in Soho and food tours in Greenwich Village will not be on this list (as fabulous as those things are!).

Statue of Liberty/ Ellis Island: These are wonderful attractions if you have the time.   Although, we really enjoyed visiting Liberty island, and learning about immigration at Ellis Island, the line-ups for the boats are always very long, especially in peak season. If your children are not good at waiting for hours in line (whose are?), you can always take the Staten Island Ferry instead, and catch a closer look at lady Liberty. It is FREE, takes much less time (about 25 minutes each way) and is just as much fun for the kids!

Battery Park: Take some time to walk along the park, on the west side it is very pretty and has lot of spots to sit and enjoy the gorgeous views.

Brooklyn Bridge: My boys really enjoy walking along here, and I enjoy the amazing photos you can get from, and of, the bridge! Just be careful to stay on the right side of the line, as the bikes go zipping past very quickly!

South Street Seaport: Very close to the Brooklyn Bridge, and where Fulton Street meets the East River, this is charming historic spot.  It is amazing to see the tall renovated sailing ships and original mercantile buildings. There is also a small Maritime Museum, fish market and interesting shops in the area.

Chelsea Highline: This is a fairly new feature  that we absolutely love. It is a public park built on the historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side.  It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues.  It is free to enjoy and a GREAT place to bring kids who love to explore. There are numerous spots to sit, and even “viewing galleries” in which you can sit on bleachers and watch the streets below — it is fantastic!

Chelsea Market– If you are visiting the Chelsea Highline, head a few blocks over (9th Ave) & visit this lovely indoor market.

Washington Square Park: If you are in the Greenwich Village area, stop by this lovely park.  It is a beautiful spot for to sit and people watch while the kids enjoy the playground.

There is so much to do in NYC. There is no way to do everything in just one trip, but I hope this has provided you with enough information to start planning your own family adventure!  Hopefully, like us, you will be back for more!

Sarah McCormack lives in Ottawa and is a mother to two boys and a family photographer. She and her husband have taken their children to New York City five times so far.

  3. Lulu*s Lulu’s is an online retailer and is one of many hipster clothing stores.

It allows you to wear spring’s hottest color trend to remain fashionably current but
will also maintain your professional appearance at work.

I feel big, loose-fitting separates can be worn by both slim
    and slightly overweight women.

  4. Hi everyone, it’s my first pay a visit at this
