What is the appropriate way to celebrate 15 years of marriage?

Last week, Hubby and I passed a pretty major milestone — 15 years of marriage.

When we celebrated our first anniversary, we went to a bed and breakfast in Kingston. Although it sounds peaceful and romantic, and that was certainly the intention, it really wasn’t. A couple staying above us came in really late and made a whole lot of racket laughing and stumbling around drunk, which was followed by some other, ahem, “noises” that kept us up half the night.

But after that first anniversary, it all starts to get fuzzy and mostly involves me forgetting what the actual date was in January (thank goodness Hubby had the date engraved on his ring or we’d never remember!). We did, however, manage to pull out all the stops for our 10th anniversary. Hubby asked whether I’d like a special piece of jewelry or a trip. I said “trip!” And off to Cuba the three of us went (Stella was 5). We had a fabulous time!

Now, it’s 15 years. That’s a biggie sort of anniversary, isn’t it? In the morning, Hubby gave me this beautiful card:

I looked up what the traditional gift is supposed to be for year #15 and this is what I found:

“Crystal is the primary material for the fifteenth anniversary with glass as the modern material and watches as the alternate modern choice. Beautiful crystal jewelry, crystal flowers, or a figurine would make a nice gift. The crystal anniversary is also a great opportunity to invest in a feature piece of decorative crystal or art glass for your home.”

So in case Hubby was feeling a bit lost, there is some definite clear guidance out there on what is considered the appropriate gift for celebrating a 15th wedding anniversary. Being a man of unique tastes, he instead opted to give me this. He explained that this gift, with its ability to increase the effectiveness of our interpersonal communications, could certainly get us through the next 15 years.

What can I say? The man is genius. GENUIS! I tell ya.

Happy anniversary baby! xoxo

  1. Happy anniversary!!! Love the lists….they most certainly will lead to another 15 years 😉

  2. Happy anniversary! I can think of a LOT of applications for those lists :). We’re terrible at remembering our anniversary too – I’m hoping our kids make a note of it and let us know when number 25 rolls around!

  3. We celebrated 15 years in August and I have no memory of what we did. Here, let me ask Tony…
He says “Hmmmmm, we did something, I’m sure….”
Ah well, we will have to try to do better when we hit 20.

And have you noticed that our milestone years are eerily similar?!

ha love it I think they should include one of those in marriage prep courses to give them a head start!  he is a genius!

Like you we took the time to celebrate our first anniversary ( returning to the place we spent our honey moon, this time with family and we had a blast) but then the years got busy with house purchases, and babies.  We really didn’t celebrate the milestones in our lives as a couple, us taking second fiddle to the kids events etc.  But on our 10th we decided to do something different, and go away to the couples resort, formerly Bear Trail and upgraded to a Jr. Suite.  The resort was full, but you would never have known it.  Good insulation I guess :o)  anyway, since then we have decided to travel each year sans kidlets on our anniversary.  The past two years we even went so far as to take long weekends down south ( first a 3 day 4 night in jamaica, then a 4 day 5 night in mexico.)  Now we may not always be able to do something that lavish each year, but we both leave our weekend anniversary trips looking forward to the next one.  We gave the gift of time to each other.  I think that is appropriate any time!

I think this is so smart to do! It is so rare that Hubby and I ever actually do anything alone. It is just such a challenge to find care for the kids. But I am going to take a page out of your book and just MAKE it happen!

fantastic post BTW and Happy Anniversary to an amazing couple!

Happy anniversary. Love the gift! totally appropriate. The question is, what did you get him?

We also have the date problem, and to compound it, we actually have two anniversaries and can never remember which to celebrate. Our officiant was only licensed in Ont and we were having the wedding in QC, so we signed the license on one day and had the wedding two days later.

Btw, turns out I am married to the brother of one of your high school classmates.

Doh! You caught me red-handed … I completely forgot and the poor guy didn’t get a thing (unless you count this blog post, which he doesn’t read?? hee hee!) I now need to know who our small world connection is! I will DM you.

Happy Anniversary! I had to laugh. We have our wedding date engraved in our rings too and I have been known to check it. (Sidebar: we also have a secret message, that no one has ever seen!) I honestly can’t remember what we’ve done for any of anniversaries, save one. A few years ago we spent the weekend in a wee boutique hotel in Old Montreal. It was amazing. I love the idea of marking the day with a holiday, near or far.

Oh yes. I remember now. I spent one of our wedding anniversaries in New York City, with YOU. LOL.Your hubby seems to know you pretty well. I laughed out loud at his choice of gift, and I think it’s loads better than crystal. (Which would have been what in this case: a knickknack? A goblet? An ornament? Gah.)

  8. Love the WTF card!
