Boot Camp Experience, Part 2: If it sounds too good to be true, it (of course!) is

I’ve been following the girls over at Losing It In Ottawa, and a couple of them mentioned that they were looking forward to their upcoming experience in a boot camp. It piqued my interest.

I’d done a “boot camp” styled workout program once before and definitely saw results. And right now, I think I need to see some results to feel motivated to work out regularly and stay healthy. I already own a gym membership, have access to lots of nice walking paths and a good pair of shoes — so no excuses here — just a severe lack of motivation. I’d rather do dishes than workout. Or just about anything, really.

Which is all kind of nonsensical and irrational, because after working out, I do feel better. And it is a proven way to keep yourself healthy in both body and mind. But before actually starting a workout, I get all cranky and resentful … whining to myself about my slowing metabolism, how it’s not fair that I can’t eat all the foods that the rest of my family eats, and blah, blah, blah.

In an ideal world, I would be more like my husband, who craves physical activities — they are his “fun” time. Whereas I look forward to quiet time with a book (and the inevitable nap that follows), he looks forward to going for a mountain bike, snowboard, or hike. For him, exercise is just a side effect of his fun. He would never step into a gym and do exercise. But me? I see it as a necessary evil, not fun. (I wonder if this is a male/female thing or just vastly different dispositions?)

Anyhow, as my first Boot Camp post noted, I am locked in now. It’s a go. I am there. I am committed.

But take a look at this site for Booty Boot Camp and tell me if you don’t think I’m mad? It is so darn cheesey — with the pink! pink! pink!

But like legions of women, I was drawn in with promises. Promises I knew could not be true. The homepage reads:

“Get in shape today with this super-slimming, body-sculpting boot camp that gets you bikini-ready in as little as two nights per week!”

Okay, so I didn’t swallow the “bikini-ready” bit — this post-partum body will never be seen in a bikini ever again! But, I saw the “two nights” and thought, “okay, I can handle a two-night commitment.”

So I handed over my hard-earned money and registered.

Now, after you register, you receive a calendar. It is then that you realize that yes, there are two nights a week of actual group boot camp sessions. But to actually achieve the results you are also advised to work-out at home with a DVD for an additional two sessions.

I was sort of peeved about this. I fired off an email asking if the DVD was included in the cost or if it was an additional fee that we were going to be asked to pay. Lauri, my Boot Camp instructor, explained that it was included in the cost and that I would also receive a guidebook.

Sheeh. Guess I can’t be annoyed about that then.

I also asked Lauri if she would mind if I blogged about my experience in the boot camp. She responded:

“I would LOVE for you to blog about my camp! I’m confident that you’ll have a great experience so I’d love for your readers to be inspired…and interested ;)”

Double sheesh! She is really making it hard for me to find an excuse to back out of this boot camp! In fact, I kind of love her already just for her enthusiasm over blogging  and her confident assurance that I’ll have a great experience.

Stay tuned and I’ll tell you how my first session went — and if I was able to walk the next day!

  1. I’m so glad you’re blogging the experience. They’re super pro social media at Booty Camp, i’m sure they’re thrilled to pieces you’re going to blog about it :)

    Can’t wait to hear more!

  2. I can’t wait to hear more too!

I have always said that the hardest part about exercising is putting on the running shoes. Once they are on, you are committed. The best way for me to get the shoes to actually go ON MY FEET is to have an appointment or workout buddy waiting for me. Otherwise it is back-out city for me.

    Have fun. You rock :)

  3. My 2nd session is tonight, I’m expecting it to be twice as hard as the last one 😉 Will let you know.

  4. Can’t wait to hear how it goes. Like your friend, I’m a Greco addict… Been going for 2 years and haven’t missed a week except for when we’re away on vacation.

The more you do it, the more you will come to crave it.

    Have a great time!
