Hi XUP - thanks for the suggestions. For functional reasons, I'm really looking for a large desk that accommodates the computer and provides me space to have my paper resources quick at hand while I'm typing. BUT, I think I've found a solution that still provides for "character" -- I've just concluded a deal with someone on kijiji for a wood (solid wood apparently!) desk that has a computer keyboard tray, a matching bookshelf and a high-quality computer chair too. I'm thrilled, since I went around to Cosco, Staples, Ikea and the like and couldn't pull out my wallet. Of course, I'll never get rid of my fave desk from my grandfather, despite our space limitations here. It will take on a more decorative place in our home (and another much-needed place to store books!).

Can't you just get one of those really compact computer desks and still use the oak desk for your non-computer work? Or trade in the big cumbersome computer for a laptop? Or have a keyboard tray attached to the desk somehow? (I hate to see you giving in to characterlessness)
