I'm trying, I really am.

Generally, I give a book about 25 pages, maybe 50, to hook me. After that point, I just close it up and move to the next book in my pile. I don’t look back. I have piles everywhere — in the dining room, on my bedside table, in my office. I just can’t live without a good book on the go. Emphasis being on good.

So when you hear of a book that is impossible to put down, that is racing off the shelves and impossible to get at the library, well, you just gotta get your hands on it, right? I’m talking Twilight, by Stephanie Meyers. This bestseller has been reviewed and labelled as a “phenomena,” and appealing to all demographics.

Remember I said 50 pages at the most? Okay, I’ve given it a good 200 pages now. I keep trying, and trying, and persisting … thinking the good part is just around the corner. Practically every woman I know has read it now and I have yet to hear a bad review. I must be missing something.

So one more night it is. Perhaps tonight the writing will be less dull, the facile characters more complex, the plot more thrilling … really, I’ll keep trying.

Come on Edward, don’t let me down tonight.

  1. Did it get any better?

  2. if you’re not hooked now, you never will be. i will be the first to say that twilight is horribly written, and really jeuvenile – BUT that being said, i did read all 4 books, and if a new one ever comes out, i will read it. i just can’t help myself!

  3. Twilight really is a guilty pleasure. I have friends that gush about it non-stop, and other friends who can’t stop bashing it. Don’t feel bad if you don’t like it though. I hated Gladiator and it won an Oscar…

Gladiator won an Oscar? Okay, done. Edward is dumped.

  5. I have more and more friends of “our” age who can’t stand it and can’t get into it. You are not alone. Me – never even tried…

  6. If you’re looking for a page turner I have to recommend The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I was hooked before I even finished page one!
