Teachers’ Gifts: The Bi-Annual Conundrum

Every Christmas and end-of-year, there is the conundrum: What should I give my children’s teachers?

I like to give a little something as an expression of thanks, but what to give is often a challenge because I don’t want to be giving something that will end up in the lunchroom with the tag “free!” on it. And, well, I also don’t want to go broke either. Max has three teachers at his preschool and Stella has two teachers at her elementary school — a total of five gifts can really add up in the cash department! But whenever I feel stuck, this post from Kristen at Motherese reminds me what is most important to a teacher’s heart — a simple note from a student.

This year, as in — right now — I have just spent a weekend with in-laws arriving from Australia, Max celebrating his 3rd birthday party, and preparing for moving house this Wednesday. So, not much creativity is left in my little scattered brain at the moment! Thankfully though, a facebook friend shared her teacher’s gift idea and was not only gracious enough to let me copy it, but also made me the beautiful hand-crafted labels that really finish the gift off perfectly! So, massive thank you to Heather of Heather’s Hints of Happiness for this … not only am I short on time, but all my scrapbooking materials are already packed up! You are a sweetheart (and a talented one at that!).

Here’s what you need if you’d also like to do this gift idea, which was originally found by Heather on the Tip Junkie site:

#1. Reuseable and portable cool drink holders: I saw these at Pier One for $13 each, but ended up buying mine at Loblaws’s Superstore for $5 each (thank you Loblaws!)
#2. A package of lemonade that has individual sachets. This box that I bought was on sale at Loblaws for $2.99 (again, thank you Loblaws!)
#3. Simple sheets of paper for a personalized thank-you note, to be tied up with wrapping ribbon. Taken from Grandma’s notebook for free.
#4. And the piece de resistance — the super cute labels which read: “Thank you for quenching my thirst for knowledge”

And here’s how mine turned out (you’ll forgive the terrible photograph quality, right?):

For more teacher’s gifts ideas, Andrea from a Peek Inside the Fishbowl compiled a ton of them last year, which you can check them out by clicking here (read the post and the comments). Or, if you’d like to keep it simple, here is an idea to help your child make a thank-you note.

A conversation about Twitter and DH

I joined Twitter back in January 2010, and at the time I felt really undecided about it. But now, there is no indecision. The plain fact is that I love it. It amuses me to no end.

I know that non-Twitter folks find the whole thing “meaningless” and therefore a waste of time. However, I think the meaningless stuff is what is most amusing. Sure, I also hear about local earthquakes, international breaking news, amber alerts, Health Canada warnings, and just about any other kind of serious event well before those who are not on twitter. And I appreciate that. But I think it’s likely that I appreciate the meaningless stuff the most.

Here is an example for you. This morning, I tweeted this out:

One of the responses I received back was this:

As I read Shona’s tweet, I started to chuckle. My husband looked at me like, “what’s the joke?”

So I backed up and told him of my original tweet and that a “power outage would not stop my DH from his coffee!” Then I also read him Shona’s response about “chewing on the beans.”

He was grinning as I recounted these and then he asked:

What does DH mean?

I explained that “DH” is short form that we tweeters use to keep things in their 140-character maximum. DH = dear husband, DS = dear son, DD = dear daughter … and so on.

He replied:

Oh, so it doesn’t mean ”Dick Head.”

The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Packing Lunch

Call me crazy, but there’s something almost soothing about packing children’s lunches … all the little containers, and bite size bits, snugly tucked into a brightly coloured lunch bag. And yet, this does not translate at all to the act of actually packing a lunch for myself.

There are countless good, solid reasons for me to pack a lunch: there is no convenient lunch spot near my work, buying lunch is expensive, I need the time to work-out (and instead eat at my desk), and last but not least, I can’t stand line-ups. But, with all these reasons, I still don’t manage to pack a lunch more than two days a week. So I either fork out for a lunch or I do without and survive on coffee.

Now, although I have titled this post “The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Packing Lunch,” I have likely misled you. Did you think I’d actually have all the answers? Oh no, my friends, that’s what I need you for!

Here’s the deal: I’ve discovered one great tip, which I’ll gladly share with you … but then, please share with me all the tips and tidbits of wisdom you have on this tedious subject so that I can finally get my act together! Promise?

Okay, here goes…. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed these new packets of soup in the deli section of my grocery store. They are upright, zip-locked bags of organic soup — enough for two lunches. So what I’ve been doing is buying a few and putting them in the fridge at work. I can empty half into a bowl, heat it in the microwave and leave the other half in the zip-lock bag for another day’s lunch. The company name is Happy Planet and the flavours I’ve tried so far are: Moraccan Chick Pea, Tuscan Tomato and Thai Coconut. My fave is the Thai Coconut so far.

Some fellow travel bloggers I’d like you to meet!

I’m really thrilled to be hosting a guest post tomorrow by Julie Henning of Road Trips for Families!

But let me back up a little in order to introduce her …

While I was at BlogHer, there were “Birds of a Feather” lunches that we could join. I dropped into a seat at the “travel” table and met some really cool women who run really clever blogs. These included (and please let me know if I’ve forgotten someone!):

  • Traci from Go BIG or go Home:  a blog which chronicles the visits a small-town family takes going to “world’s largest” attractions — from world’s largest fork to the world’s longest continuous sidewalk. (And yes — I am totally going to convince her to come to Ottawa to write about our world’s largest skating rink!)

  • Cheryl from Kimberley Seldon Design Group: Among Kimberley Seldon’s claims to fame is that she is the Decorating Editor of Canada’s Style at Home magazine. And Cheryl is the Group’s Events & Media manager. I really liked Cheryl’s quiet style and after the event I seemed to bump into her everywhere!

  • Anne and Sophie from Hip Travel Mama: This blog is geared to families who love to travel and like to do it in style. This is how they describe the site: “You know that mom at school, on the playground, or at work who always has the scoop on the hippest places to go, shop, dine and play? Here you have access to parents like you who share your passion for luxury travel, good food, wine and fashion.” And for the record, both Anne and Sophie were hip.

  • Emily from Country Inns & Suites by Carlson: Emily is the Social Media Manager and her business card says: “I’m Emily. Let’s Talk.” I checked out the site and it has a really helpful Destinations & Activities section where you can learn more about as well as find out about any destination-specific offers and specials.

  • Glennia from The Silent I: This blog shares family travels, both foreign and domestic locales – from Greenland to Galapagos, Tokyo to Tripoli. I was really intrigued to hear that many of the travels are inspired because of her husband’s love of solar eclipses. I love a good excuse to travel! (okay, any excuse!)

  • Lisa from Frisco Mama: I didn’t get much of a chance to connect with Lisa, but I did manage to have her business card in my pile of BlogHer treasures. I checked out her blog and it’s an ode to San Francisco, her home town. I have yet to visit this city and when I do, I will definitely skip the guidebook and go right to Lisa’s blog. I know I’ll be in good hands!

And last but not least, I met another Julie. We were sitting right beside each other at lunch, so we got to chat a great deal. Before leaving the table, we promised to keep in touch. Sure enough, a lovely email arrives to me this week with the subject heading “Lunch with Julie.” :)

Julie’s travel specialty is road trips for families. And this is a subject that I really want to learn more about — not just where to go, but how to do them in such a way that all of the family — adults and kids! — get the most enjoyment out of the experience.

Her blog answers this call with a section titled “Feed Me” on how to travel without eating fast food and chicken trips the entire time (a major pet peeve of mine!); another titled “Tech & Gadgets” with reviews and overviews; and last but not least, a section on ”Geocaching,” which is a kind of high-tech treasure hunt that I see great potential in making road trips more fun for my family.

Just as Glennia uses solar eclipses as an impetus for a family trip, on Road Trips for Families they suggest using geocaching as a reason for heading out on a road trip. They call it Going on VaCachen™ (with a Facebook page here).

I wanted to learn more about this and I thought you might find it interesting too! So Julie has been kind enough to share a glimpse into how geocaching works and some tips for how we can get started.

Tune in tomorrow for her guest post on geocaching!
