Arriving into Chicago

On Saturday, I flew to Chicago. I am attending a trade show on Tuesday for work, so I thought I’d arrive early and see some sights. I’ve never been to Chicago, and I always feel like it’s a real shame when one travels for business and never gets to see anything but the hotel and the meeting rooms. So whenever possible, I try to book a vacation day before or after and take in a little bit of the atmosphere.

Before arrival, my knowledge of Chicago was basic, at best. I knew that:

  • it is windy
  • you can eat a type of pizza called “deep dish”
  • it is home of the Second City Comedy Club
  • there may have been gangsters
  • oh, and Gini lives there, and maybe someone called Oprah

I arrived in on Saturday, late afternoon. I checked into a hotel that I booked via the discount site Hotwire. That means that I didn’t know the name of the hotel at the time I made the booking. As it turns out, I ended up at a place called Hotel Sax Chicago.

For the price I paid ($70 Cdn), I am very happy with it. It’s in an excellent central location where I can walk just about everywhere and the staff have been very nice. The decor is quite “hip” but the rooms and amenities are fairly basic. No thick plush towels and toilet paper here, folks! However, the room is large and quiet, and I’ve slept like a log here.

As soon as I got my room key, I unloaded my stuff and freshened up quickly from the flight. I wanted to catch a few glimpses of the city before it got too dark. Here are a few shots from my walkabout.

Most of the stores were closed or on the verge of closing up for the day. But I loved getting a chance to poke around this quaint little spot called P.O.S.H. It has a collection of sweet and small antique pieces of china as well as some new items. So cozy and enjoyable to browse!

Architectural details to delight were everywhere on my walk … when I looked up …

… and at eye-level ….

… and even when I looked down!

Now, the first thing people tell you to do when you come to Chicago is to go on a river cruise. Well, the river cruising season is over. But of course, one still needs to see the river. So here it is.

After just this first few hours, I already know that I need to come back here with Hubby and the kids. There is just so much that I know they would love and it’s hard to fully enjoy it without them. Do you ever feel that way?
