I Can’t Handle It. I Need Deodorant! (Lady Speed Stick Review)

LSS_Logo_CAN

As I mentioned in my post on henna hair colouring, one of the most difficult things (for me, at least) has been trying to transition from mainstream deodorant to more “green” options. Over the past few months, I’ve tried quite a number of different alternatives and none of them worked for me. It was during this period when I was feeling a tad, er, concerned about body odor that I was offered samples of Lady Speed Stick to review (as well as compensation from Colgate for the time I would spend reviewing them). I dashed off a quick reply, “Yep, send’ em over!”

So, there you have it, my admission: I can’t handle it. I need deodorant!

Come to think of it, my very first deodorant as a young teetn was Lady Speed Stick (back then, I think it was called Mennen). Since then, the company has re-branded and the sticks look, and even smell, different (there’s more than unscented and baby powder out there!). Have you seen the new ad campaign, “Don’t Sweat It. Handle It!”? It cracks me up … I think this one is my favourite, but it’s hard to pick …

Okay, but can these deodorants do the job though? Here are the two sweat tests I put them through.

Sweat Test #1:

  • Product name: Lady Speed Stick Power – Gel – Fresh Fusion
  • The test: Bike to yoga studio, do hot yoga class, bike home.
  • Results: I couldn’t smell an ounce of sweat … and I sweat A LOT in a hot yoga class!
  • My verdict: This deodorant does provide long lasting protection and didn’t leave any marks on my black yoga top. But I didn’t like the wet feel of the gel. It dried quickly, but I didn’t like applying it.

Sweat Test #2:

  • Product name: Lady Speed Stick Power – Cool Breeze
  • The test: Drive downtown in rush hour and then make a presentation to a new client.
  • Results: When I went to bed that night, I still smelled like I’d just gotten out of the shower.
  • My verdict: I liked this deodorant — it worked, it felt nice when I applied it, left no marks on my shirt, and last but not least, I did not worry about B.O.

  1. I’m a bit younger than you, but I remember the “by Mennen” line in the Speed Stick/Lady Speed Stick ads. I’ve never used it though – blame those East Asian genes, I guess…

  2. LOL, I’m loving these ads too! I think my favourite meerkat is the one on the dude’s t-shirt! 😀 And WOW, wtg on hot yoga! I’ve done one class, and that’s simply because the air conditioning unit in the building was broken during the class I attended in the middle of a hot July day… It will be a while before I ever attempt that again. 😉

That is an awesome commercial. Love it. Meerkats?! Lol. I have been using speed stick for a long time. But I have not heard of this scent. I guess I will give it a look again. i i dont really like ones that are too flowery or perfumey. I also like an adidas one actually. it’s fairly natural in scent and effective too. Thanks.

    • I agree on the strong smells. I don’t like perfume smells or flowerly smells. My favourites are the “fresh” scents, baby power scents or just plain unscented.

  4. Lyne Proulx says:

I definitely notice a difference using the Lady Speed Stick Power- great protection and scent.

  5. Haha That commercial is hillarious! I am loving the gel deodorant

  6. Terri Lynn Grothe says:

    thanx for sharing :)

  7. Inspire Me Heather says:

Thanks for your reviews – I’ve been using the same product for years and years and really should try something different!

  8. Alexandria Durrell says:

Yeah, I don’t like having wet armpits at all, even if it’s the gel deodorant. I totally agree that the stick one is better.

  9. Kathryn says:

I like to stick better too! I remember when Speed Stick “Orchard Blossom” was all the rage in the locker room at our high school. That stuff smelled good and worked awesome!

  10. multitestingmommy says:

It was my first one when I was a teen too! Yes, Mennen! Powder scent 😉

  11. Brooklyn Berry says:

I was wondering how it would hold up to hot yoga. That is the best test you could give it!

  12. Hahahaha the joys of Meeting The Parents! OMG What a hilarious video! LOL I believe Lady Speed stick was the first brand of deodorant I ever used as well. I find any stick deodorants clumps under my armpits for some reason. I don’t use that much at all either :-/ Lady Speed stick didn’t last that long throughout the day for me as far as odor protection goes:( The only deodorant I can use now is Secret Clinical Strength, it goes on sort of wet but it’s not a gel. Dries super quick too and doesn’t leave a residue on my clothes! Ah the joys of being a woman! LOL :)

  13. Daniela Duriavig says:

I have been on a deodorant quest for years – can’t seem to find one that works well enough for me. I have been trying to go natural too, but I think it might be time to give up!

    • One of the commentors/readers below uses one that is “Clinical” strength … maybe that would work? As for the going au naturel, as much as I like the idea of it, I could never do it and still continue to keep a professional life! :) I’d need to do it over a looonnnggg holiday I think.

  14. I couldn’t do life without deodorant :) And I LOVE lady speed stick…actually, there is one in my gym bag right now!

  15. Moor of Everything says:

Haven’t tried the power line yet, but will have to give it a whirl! Thanks for sharing your review :)

    • I’ve decide that I’m using this power line forever now. I ran a 2K race yesterday and I didn’t sweat or have any scent at all! I felt comfortable enough to go out to dinner afterwards!

  16. Anne @DesignDreams by Anne says:

I tried searching for a green option several years ago, nothing really worked well. Sigh. So much for green!!

    • I hear it’s trial and error. I know people who have never worn deodorant in their whole lives and they never smell …. they claim it’s a PH balance and that deodorant off sets the balance so there is a period involved in resetting it. I believe them … but I’ve never had the patience to get through it yet!

  17. Hi there, I discovered your blog by the use of Google whilst looking for a comparable matter, your site got here up, it seems to be good. I have bookmarked to my favourites|added to my bookmarks.

    Just wondering,

My cousin in Europe has asked me to bring her Lady Speed Stick Scented– Anti-Perspirant. The label was pink KIN 02232857 by MENNEN It was 50g. I can’t find it anywhere! Can you help me.

    Please e-mail me back.

    • Ah, if your cousin moved to Europe a while ago, she is referring to some old packaging. All Lady Speed Stick was re-branded, with purple packaging. The types of products are a bit different … I’ve used Lady Speed Stick since I was a teen.
