Zumba® Fitness and My Quest for True Love

Growing up, I loved to dance. Most days after school, I grabbed a bus and headed to the studio for a class. Some evenings, I had two classes. I simply couldn’t get enough of them! When I was about 17 years old, I stopped taking classes and then moved away for university, where there were no classes offered. I didn’t realize then how big a loss that was … losing my true love.

Since then, I’ve tried rugby (played winger when they let me off the bench), ultimate (loved it, but managed to fracture my hip doing a layout), a variety of yoga styles including hot yoga, boot camp fitness, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, and jogging via the couch to 5k program. With the exception of ultimate, I can’t really say I ever felt even the least bit “hooked.”

So I’m still searching. I really want to find a form of exercise that I like – that I actually want to do – rather than feel obligated to do. This brings me to Zumba® fitness. People are totally ga-ga over this stuff!

In fact, I have a friend whom I would most definitely classify as “addicted.” One look at her Facebook status updates confirms it — after teaching a Zumba class or two a day, she goes back into GoodLife Fitness to take Zumba classes on the days when she’s not working!

Trish Roche, Zumba Instructor Extra-ordinaire!

Naturally, this intrigues me. I want that kind of love in my life. And since it’s dance-related, maybe it could be my true love too? I asked this same friend, Trish Roche, to answer some questions for the blog on Zumba fitness and she was kind enough to jump on board.

Julie: You are a woman possessed! Why do you think that you — and so many others! — love Zumba so much?

Trish:  Well, Zumba Fitness says, “Ditch the workout; join the party.” The music is also a key success factor — it’s just fun to move to it, and because the moves are based on Latin dance styles, it doesn’t feel like a typical workout. Most participants come to have fun and walk out (as they gaze down at their sweat-soaked clothes) that they had a good workout! To me, that’s a huge upside.

Julie: I did try a couple of Zumba classes, but I couldn’t follow a lot of the choreography. Is this normal?

Trish:  I think a few things come into play. First, if people are in their brains trying to figure out all the steps, it can be more stressful than fun. So, I always encourage people to try to relax and just enjoy the music. When they can do that, they are more likely to move the entire time, which is far better in terms of a workout anyway.

Julie:  What was wrong with the old fashioned 80s aerobics classes? Why don’t people do those anymore?

Trish:  I assume you mean, apart from the clothes??? You know, the fitness industry is really no different than anything else — there are trends and fads and “the latest thing.” You’d be surprised that some of the “old school” style classes, with high-impact moves are still around and are quite popular with certain crowds!

Julie:  Do men ever take your Zumba classes?

Trish:  I can say this, the men who come enjoy being in the company of women who are relaxed, having fun and know how to move their hips! We do have some husbands and wives for whom it is date night!

Julie:  How many calories do you think a woman my size (5’6″ and 165 lbs) could burn in one of your Zumba classes?

Trish:  Some online calculators exist, but the most accurate picture is to wear a heart-rate monitor with a calorie calculator. However, it all comes down to body weight, age, exertion level and some other variables. My typical expenditure in teaching a class is somewhere in the 400 to 500 range and I’m 5’4″ and 135.

Julie:  Tell me the truth: Are your abs strictly from doing Zumba or do you also do sit-ups and other ab exercises?

Trish:  Oh Julie. If I tell you then I’ll have to kill you*. :-)

*I’ll share Trish’s full answer on the Coffee with Julie Facebook page.

Have you found your “true love” in fitness? (Last I heard, Oprah hasn’t either, so we’re in good company I guess.) If you have, tell me what it is and how it makes you feel! Also if you’ve got questions for Trish about Zumba fitness, just jot it down in the comments and Trish will respond!

Boot Camp Experience, Part 4: How I feel at the one-week mark

So, I managed to get myself signed up for Boot Camp AND I managed to show up to the first session. But how did the first full week go?

Really well! After only one short week, I am already stronger. I can do more sit-ups, more push-ups and more squats.

This image is an original untitled work by Krista Jenkins.

And there really is nothing more gratifying than getting out of bed and feeling sore muscles. Yes, you heard me right! When you’ve incubated two babes and haven’t felt a stomach muscle since then, then it actually feels exciting to have a mild ache in your core area. (It’s easy to believe that those stomach muscles simple disintegrated after being pulled to the limit.)

As for the actual program itself, well, as I noted in my Part 2, I really hadn’t counted on all the extra work between classes. I thought I was committing myself to two evenings a week. The in-between stuff is extremely challenging to fit into the schedule (that has included children with the flu, thank you very much!), and I’m not going to beat myself up for it. The way I see it … two classes a week is MUCH better than what I was doing before. Which was, er, was nothing.

So far, here’s where I see the Booty Boot Camp program excelling:

  • Excellent, highly qualified and personable instructor (Lauri).
  • Each session is completely different, so it’s impossible for you or your muscles to get bored.
  • There are 8 locations in my home town alone, so it makes it easy to find one near you.
  • If you have to miss a session, you can do a make-up class at another location.
  • The provided DVDs for home exercise are a nice bonus and even though I haven’t really used it, my friend Mandy has been diligently using them.
  • The pricing is reasonable ($159 Cdn for 4 weeks) and the only equipment required is a yoga mat.
  • Your questions are welcomed and answered immediately via your instructor or via the Booty Boot Camp twitter account (@BootyCampFit)

And so far, here’s where I see the Booty Camp program could improve:

  • The branding and materials seem silly and almost patronizing rather than motivational. But that could just be jaded ol’ me. As example, in the guidebook that we’re provided on the first night, it suggests making a “vision board” to help keep you focused on your goals. To make the vision board, we’re to cut out pictures from women’s magazines. Um, no thanks! I think I’ll just focus on seeing my energy levels increase and feeling stronger rather than looking at photoshopped pictures of 14-year-old models dressed up in big-girl clothes.
  • The program really seems targeted to the already moderately fit, or at least not the overweight or obese. As example, the guidebook shows the owner’s “before” and “after” pics. In her “before” picture, she is wearing a bikini, appears about 18 years old, and looks great (if you asked me). But here’s a hint: my age group has disponsible income too and we’re a great market for you!
  • The recipes of the day are very difficult to use since the ingredients are not things I generally have in my cupboard. It would be better to send me a week’s worth on the weekend so I can get all the groceries for the week.

So, dear friends, as you can see, I have found far more pro’s than con’s with the program and I will persist in getting my butt to boot camp each week! And I will be sure to do a summary post at the end of my four-week program.

I know that many Coffee with Julie readers are also doing the Booty Boot Camp program and I’d love to hear how you’re finding it!

Are you doing another work-out program that is making your feel great — tell us all about it!

Bootcamp Experience, Part 3: Multi-tasking is good for you

As I mentioned in my “Itchy” post, I’m going to focus on making time for my friendships. The rationale for this completely selfish; I get a lot out of even just small bursts of girlfriend time.

But it is hard to squeeze time out of already-overloaded days and exhausted bodies. So, I’m multi-tasking!

There really is no other way to fit in both exercise and friend-time, so I managed to convince my good friend Mandy* to sign-up for Booty Boot Camp with me. (In fact, I didn’t even have to try hard to convince her. She even agreed to come to a location closer to my home. That just goes to show you what a great friend she is!)

On the first night, we’re waiting outside the doors of the gym for the class before us to end. Under her breath, Mandy says, “I’m nervous.” I took a scan of the room; it looked like she wasn’t the only nervous one, I assured her. Then she said, “There’s no fatties here.” Although I didn’t like her implication (that she was a lone “fattie” in the class), I took another scan of the room and agreed, “Nope, no fatties. But there’s some chubbies just like us, so don’t worry.”

In reality, though, she had a point. The vast majority of the women in the class looked fantastic and very few people looked like they had any kind of “weight issues.” Many of the women were also quite a bit younger than us. But, like a good friend, I showed her no fear.

************

Lots of panting, interspersed with some moaning and a few moments where I came close to hurling my cookies.

***********

At the end of our first session, with faces beet red, Mandy gave me a congratulatory hug. We had survived! And although it did feel good, we worried that walking might be difficult the next day.

Stay tuned to see how this 4-week boot camp experience fares! You can also read Part 1 and Part 2.
