And, now back to you! (Mark’s $50 Giveaway)

You’ve had just about enough “Month of Me” by now, I’m sure. So, let’s turn it back to you!

I have a treat for one of you: A $50 gift certificate from my BFF (aka Mark’s, remember?) … and just in time for the season change! (Yes, because I do still need to convince myself that I don’t hate winter. Cozy, cute winter clothes will help, right?)

I love online shopping (here’s a list of my favourite spots for getting errands done) and clothes shopping in increasingly joining my ever-expanding group of things that I never had to enter a mall for ever again. I think the only thing I still actually enjoy shopping for in person is shoes and books, and even those I still buy online sometimes too.

Anyhow, I digress. My point was that Mark’s has been working on creating a better online shopping experience on their website. It launched TODAY, and they’re really excited about it and would like you to take a look. In exchange for doing so, one of you will win a $50 gift certificate.

I’ve taken a good poke around the site and I’ve decided that if I was given $50 to spend at Mark’s, I would pick this:

This is the Denver Hayes Soft Draft Cardigan, and it’s priced at $33.74. With my left-over money, I would also add this to my shopping bag:

Mark’s calls these “Home Socks” which seems just perfect, because when I get home from the office I do love to put on big fluffy socks instead of slippers. These socks are priced at $14.99.

That brings my total to $48.73. And shipping is free until the end of the year anywhere in Canada!

I’d definitely be happy with the above selections. But I do think that, although they’ve made great strides in the right direction (such as adding customer review options, and cleaning up the design), Mark’s still needs to work on increasing the online inventory in the days ahead if they want to provide a true shopping experience. And I am hopeful that they will. (Especially so that I can add them to my list of faves!).

So, now it’s your turn. If you won the $50, what would you spend it on?

To enter this giveaway:

  • Simply browse through the Mark’s website enter your selection(s) in the comments section below.
  • I will do a draw using random.org in one week’s time (November 9th).
Good luck and have fun checking out the site!

The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Packing Lunch

Call me crazy, but there’s something almost soothing about packing children’s lunches … all the little containers, and bite size bits, snugly tucked into a brightly coloured lunch bag. And yet, this does not translate at all to the act of actually packing a lunch for myself.

There are countless good, solid reasons for me to pack a lunch: there is no convenient lunch spot near my work, buying lunch is expensive, I need the time to work-out (and instead eat at my desk), and last but not least, I can’t stand line-ups. But, with all these reasons, I still don’t manage to pack a lunch more than two days a week. So I either fork out for a lunch or I do without and survive on coffee.

Now, although I have titled this post “The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Packing Lunch,” I have likely misled you. Did you think I’d actually have all the answers? Oh no, my friends, that’s what I need you for!

Here’s the deal: I’ve discovered one great tip, which I’ll gladly share with you … but then, please share with me all the tips and tidbits of wisdom you have on this tedious subject so that I can finally get my act together! Promise?

Okay, here goes…. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed these new packets of soup in the deli section of my grocery store. They are upright, zip-locked bags of organic soup — enough for two lunches. So what I’ve been doing is buying a few and putting them in the fridge at work. I can empty half into a bowl, heat it in the microwave and leave the other half in the zip-lock bag for another day’s lunch. The company name is Happy Planet and the flavours I’ve tried so far are: Moraccan Chick Pea, Tuscan Tomato and Thai Coconut. My fave is the Thai Coconut so far.

My new BFF is named Mark

When I was younger (and er, smaller), I loved clothes shopping. But now, I only like (love!) shoe shopping.

Everything else leaves me feeling very, very grumpy. It is simply not fun to try on 10 pairs of pants just to find one that looks “okay.” Not “great” and “fabulous” — but just okay. And when you have very little spare time, I think you’ll agree that this is pretty much the last way you’d want to spend it. To add insult to injury, you then need to fork over your hard-earned cash for something that you feel just “okay” about.

All in all, clothes shopping has transformed itself from a fun experience to a chore that I like to get done and over with as expediently as possible. I’ve found ways to do this, too. I will block off a whole day and go to one or two stores that I know sell clothes that will work for me. I will only buy full outfits — never just a top or a skirt. I want the whole package all at once. I don’t want to have to shop around in other stores to find a match. This might sound like a more expensive way of doing things, but in the end I think I save a lot of money and closet space with this “method.”

My husband shops this way too. Basically he goes into The Bay or Mark’s Work Warehouse and gets all he needs, all at once. So perhaps I actually learned my “method” from him.

So when I received an invitation from the same Mark’s Work Warehouse that my husband shops at, I immediately recognized the name and felt familiar with what their products were. But I guess that’s the point …. most of us have been into a Mark’s Work Warehouse for something practical, like construction boots or men’s jeans, but not to shop for stylish women’s clothing that you could wear on the weekend or to the office.

But this invitation asked me to do just that. To come on in to Mark’s and check out the women’s section — try some things on and let a team of stylists help you do it. AND keep the outfit to bring home. Who could say no, really?

So in addition to spoiling me rotten, my new BFF is named Mark because he introduced me to:

As you can tell, I’m really smitten. I’m thrilled with the outfit that was I given to take home (which you can see in this picture), but more than that, I’m going to go back again this weekend and treat myself to at least a few new outfits. Mark’s my new BFF … sizes that fit, waistbands that don’t dig in, no mall traffic to fight and really great prices!

Thanks to High Road Communications and Mark’s for opening my eyes — this is my kinda shopping!

School for Bloggers: The mandatory BlogHer recap post that never happened. And won’t. (#BlogHer10)

So. BlogHer. I know, I know. I’m supposed to do a recap of my experience — what was great, what was not so great, which blogger idols I met and what swag I lugged back. But I’m not going to. I just didn’t have time this week and now I don’t feel like it.

Plus, it’s totally unnecessary, since some fabulous writers have already done great recaps. So I’ll share a few of those with you instead.

First, I’ll point you towards the recaps written by my BlogHer roomie and travel buddy Andrea from A Peek Inside The Fishbowl. She wrote about her overall impressions as well as the swag.

Here is Andrea in one of a number of fun art installations that took place on the Voices of the Year Gala evening. She doesn’t like being in photos, which is silly since she has supermodel cheekbones but I don’t think she’ll mind this one because it’s blurry — and cute too!

And then there are the recaps done by The Bloggess, whose twisted humour I always enjoy. Here in her Part 1 of three posts she’s written on BlogHer, you’ll get lots of laughs but won’t learn a thing about BlogHer (which is basically my post except no laughs). She is a total celebrity in the wacky world of blogging and people were lined up to say hello to her. I totally lined up too. And here is my photo with her:

Look at me — I’m practically drooling on the poor woman I am so happy! Seeing Brad Pitt and having him put his arms around me couldn’t make me as happy as this moment.

And last but not least, I would like you to read Shannon from Three Seven‘s  post on BlogHer. I don’t know how she did it, but she managed to describe all of the intensity of the experience in words. The BlogHer she describes is the BlogHer experience I had.

Shannon was one of the artists who created a piece for BlogHer’s “Tell the World, Make it Count” art auction. The proceeds of this auction will be donated to The Nature Conservancy clean-up effort in the Gulf of Mexico. And here she is with her piece:

Shannon’s twitter handle is @zchamu, like the whale. But as you can clearly see, she’s damn gorgeous in addition to being talented.

And there you have the lazy girl’s guide to doing a BlogHer recap!  :)

3 super-easy ways to make things merrier

I’m lazy all about keeping things quick & easy. With the snow sprinkling outside my office window, the Christmas spirit is starting to take hold.

Here are 3 super-easy ways to share the Christmas spirit:

#1.  Christmas stamps
Most of us end up sending at least a dozen Christmas or holiday cards out at this time of year. Instead of buying the Christmas-themed stamp, consider the Mental Health stamp.

This domestic stamp is sold in a 10-pack and one dollar from each packet sold will go to the Canada Post Foundation for Mental Health. This foundation is doing excellent work in reducing the stigma associated with mental illness and provide funding support to front-line organizations.

If half the population of the Ottawa bought one packet of these stamps, that would equate to about $500,000. Buy a stamp, make a difference!

#2.  Grocery shopping
No doubt about it, you’re going to be in the grocery store sometime before Christmas. While you’re there, pick up a few extra items to help those facing hard times.

With layoffs come hard times for many families. It’s easy to help our local community to stay fed and healthy this winter with the The Ottawa Food Bank donation bins found in grocery stores all across the city.

The items most in demand are on this list. Go grocery shopping, make a difference!

#3.  Blood: the free gift
Even when the budget is at its tightest, it’s possible to provide an immeasurable donation to your community.

It will take a bit more effort than the stamps or the groceries, but not much really. Canadian Blood Services has a really efficient appointment system. If you’ve never given blood before, you can read about my experience here

The blood from one person’s donation can save three lives. Three lives! Donate one hour of time, make a difference!

Easy as 1, 2, 3!
